Top 5 largest construction sites in Croatia in 2020

We have already written about large investments in railways in Croatia, but now we bring you the 5 largest construction sites in Croatia in 2020. Infrastructure projects worth HRK 25 billion kunas are being implemented throughout Croatia. For some, EU funds have just been approved, while others are in a high phase of construction. Below are the four largest projects worth around 5.5 billion kunas, plus a concession for the Zagreb Deep Sea Container Terminal, which will start in the next two months.

Construction of D-403 road

It is a road about 3 km long that will enable faster delivery and unloading of cargo to the port of Rijeka and open a completely new entrance to the center of Rijeka. The value of the construction is HRK 456.3 million. The project includes the construction of several buildings, the most significant of which are: the Podmurvice tunnel (approx. 1253 m), the Piopi viaduct (approx. 316 m), the Mlaka viaduct (approx. 144 m) and one 56 m long underpass. Without this road, further development of the Port of Rijeka is almost impossible.

Next month, the companies Kolektor from Slovenia, GP Krk from Croatia, and Euro-Asfalt from Bosnia and Herzegovina will be introduced to the work on the construction site. The deadline for the completion of construction is 36 months.

Zagreb Deep Sea Container Terminal

The Port of Rijeka is the largest seaport in Croatia and the second-largest economic center. Due to its strategic position, it has always been regarded as an important gateway to the CE and SEE. On September 9, the deadline for the Port of Rijeka Authority to make one of the most important decisions in its history expires – who will receive a concession for the development and management of the Zagreb Deep Sea container terminal for the next 50 years.

Two offers have arrived. The first is a Chinese consortium consisting of Ningbo Zhoushan Port, Tianjin Port Overseas and China Road and Bridge Corporation offered a permanent annual concession fee of 2m euros, with a commitment to complete the construction of the second phase in five years. The second offer consists of the Dutch company APM Terminal BV and the Croatian company Enna Logic (PPD). Their concession fee is lower than the first offer – 1m euros a year. Also, they offered the completion of the second phase of construction of the terminal for 10 years.

Railway Hrvatski Leskovac – Karlovac

The value of the construction is estimated at 2.3 billion kuna without VAT, making this section the most expensive new railway in Croatia. The section is 44 kilometers long. In addition to the reconstruction and renovation of the existing railway and the construction of the second track, the reconstruction of the Hrvatski Leskovac, Jastrebarsko and Karlovac stations is also planned. The reconstruction of the railway includes the renovation and modernization of stable electric traction facilities, signaling and safety and telecommunication devices.

Railway Križevci – Koprivnica – Hungarian border

This project is very interesting because it has a higher value than the value of the Pelješac bridge. The railway is part of the Mediterranean corridor worth over HRK 3 billion. The works will include the construction of a new track and the reconstruction of an existing one. 43-kilometer long railway line will enable the speed of 160 km/h. The contractor for this project is Turkish company Cengiz Insaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A. S. The contract was signed in 2019 and the project deadline is 42 months.

New ring-road at Novi Vinodolski

The new ring-road of the town of Novi Vinodolski is only 9.8 kilometers long. In addition to the route itself, the 834-meter-long Zagora tunnel and the Ričina viaduct (1,062 meters) will have to be built. Part of the ring-road, the 6.5-kilometer-long Selce-Novi Vinodolski section, is an integral part of the future Križišće-Žuta Lokva highway. The deadline for completion is 24 months. The construction of the ring road will be financed by Croatian Motorways Ltd from its own funds, without new credit indebtedness.
