As a student in Croatia, I would like to help everyone who is coming first time in Zadar. Are you coming to study or you are just an exchange student, one of the first things you have to do is find a place to stay. The University of Zadar is the oldest in Croatia (1396) with about 5.5 thousand students, but it has only one dormitory. Because of that, finding student accommodation in Zadar can be a problem for you. I must mention that the number of tourists has doubled in the last few years, so there are fewer and fewer apartments for long-term rent. Mostly, apartments are rented to students until May 1 or June 1, because then the tourist season begins.
Apartments – Private accommodation
Online marketplace
One of the options is to rent a furnished studio apartment. The best online marketplace for booking student accommodation in Zadar is njuškalo.hr with an offer of over 100 thousands of properties for sale or rent. Another also very popular accommodation search site is Index Oglasi. Placing ads on the njuškalo.hr site is paid while it is free on Index, so you will surely find differences in the offer of these two most popular websites. The average price for a single person studio costs from 300-350 euros per month plus additional charges like electricity, water, etc.
Facebook groups
Given that most apartments are rented on websites through agencies that charge a monthly fee of one month, many students looking for their student accommodation in Zadar through Facebook groups. Below I will list some of them.
- Najam stanova Zadar
- PRODAJEM-KUPUJEM-IZNAJMLJUJEM-ZADAR
- Iznajmljivanje i prodaja stanova Zadar-BEZ AGENCIJA

Student dormitories
The capacity of the Student Dormitory is 212 beds or 94 rooms (18 triple and 76 double), while during the summer it operates as a hostel. Also, students can look for accommodation in a high school dormitory that has approximately 50 places. That’s a total of about 260 places, which is less than five percent of the total number of students. I would also mention the problem of the sports hall that students in Zadar still don’t have. Because of this, sports activities cannot be held in suitable conditions. The biggest advantages of studying in Zadar are the sea, relatively sunny weather, and a multitude of student facilities.
Accommodation dormitories prices
In general, the price of accommodation in Student Dormitory is 300 kuna per month, which is really cheap. For accommodation in an apartment, students must pay a minimum of 200-300 euros per month plus for utilities. Such a large difference in the price of renting an apartment and a student dormitory is a good reason to look for accommodation in a student dormitory instead of staying in an overpriced apartment.
New student dormitory in 2021
There are plans to build a new dormitory with a capacity of about 600 beds and a new canteen with 500 seats and a capacity of 2,415 meals per day. Certainly, the new dormitory will make life easier for all students in Zadar. The opening is planned for 2021.

Student canteens
Probably one of the best things about student life in Croatia. While you will have to spend between 20-30 euros for an average dinner in Zadar for two people, in a student canteen one menu costs about 1.5 euros.
