Viktoriapark Berlin, a lovely park dominated by a fantastic waterfall

Do you know that Berlin is an exceptionally green city? Most people know about the Tiergarten, but not for other lesser-known parks. One of them is Viktoriapark Berlin, located on one of the highest hills in Berlin, in the Kreuzberg settlement. The Viktoriapark is dominated by a magnificent monument from where you will have one of the best free panoramic views of the city. Perhaps the best attraction of the park is a waterfall that is open during the summer period and is the only one in the whole city.

History of Viktoriapark Berlin

Until the 18th century, this part of Berlin was known for its many vineyards. In 1818, the foundation stone for the construction of a national monument was laid. It is known as the Prussian National Monument of Liberation (Befreiugskriege) symbolizing the victory in the wars against France and Napoleon Bonaparte. It was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, one of the most famous German architects known for his neoclassical and neo-gothic buildings. The monument is high of 60 Prussian feet (18.83 m) and reminds on the tops of Gothic churches. Find out more information about the monument here.

Without a doubt, Viktoriapark is one of my favorite parks to visit in Berlin during warm sunny days. Take a beer in one of the nearby kiosks, climb up the hill in the park and enjoy the view. Local people mostly come here to socialize with friends or just read some books. Simply, a chillout park in Berlin. I would recommend that you try a Club-Mate, a very popular local drink.

At the bottom of the waterfall, there is a small pond with a bronze statue of fishermen with water ghosts in the net. Many mountain plants have been planted to create a feeling of being in a mountainous area. The waterfall usually works with a pump pumping 13,000 liters of water per minute.

Botanical Garden Berlin, a beautiful oasis away from the city

Located 40 minutes from the city centre, this botanical garden is a treat for the soul and eyes. Botanical Garden Berlin is the largest of its kind in Germany. Its greenhouses are also the largest in Europe. I visited it during the spring (in April) and spent three hours enjoying the place.

Excellent glasshouse collections

In the beginning, I would recommend you to explore the garden map because it is very big so you know where you are going unless you want to lose it. The total area of the park is 43 hectares with about 22,000 different plant species. Also, the garden consists of several buildings and glasshouses, such as Grand Pavilion and Pavilion Victoria with a total area of 6,000 m². Greenhouses have a wonderful range of plants that are very well presented. A large pavilion is most famous where the temperature is 30 degrees high. Inside you will find many tropical plants. Learn more on Wikipedia.

Walking through the garden you will go through the woods and meadows with plants from all around the world, decorated in natural landscapes. I was most impressed with the part with plants from the Far East of Japan and China.

Wonderful Christmas lights display

Also, if you have a chance to visit the Botanic Garden Berlin during Advent time, you will be greeted by a special exhibition prepared for Christmas. A garden lined with thousands of lights, with music in the background, and with incredible sculptures of light. You will also find several Christmas booths for food and drinks, a small ice rink and more!

Botanical Garden Berlin – relax and enjoy

No matter the season, this is an ideal place to relax from the busy urban life. As a disadvantage, I would point out that all the information isn’t translated into English, which is a little disappointing. The museum is especially good for children to help them understand from which part of the world the plants come. The ticket price for the museum is 2.5 euros, while the whole garden costs 6 euros.

Discover the most beautiful and interesting sights around Berlin with Berlin Travel Guide Experiences. Find, compare, and book sightseeing tours, attractions, excursions, things to do, and fun activities.

At the end of the tour, I would recommend that you take some time for coffee on the beautiful outdoor café overlooking the gardens. Find out more information about Botanical Garden Berlin on:

Park Sustipan, a place in Split with so much calm and beauty

Close to the centre of Split, there is a beautiful park overlooking the city and the islands. More precisely, park Sustipan is located on the ridge at the entrance to the city harbour. Honestly, I don’t know any other place in Split which has so much calm and beauty.

History of Park Sustipan

The history of this place is also very interesting. It begins in the late antiquity when a Christian basilica was built. On the foundations was later built a medieval monastery of St. Stephen under the pines. Interestingly, there was also living the last member of Croatian royal dynasty of Trpimirović, King Stjepan II. After the 14th century, the monastery was abandoned and during the 18th century, it was completely destroyed. Today this place is a beautiful park. There’s a small church too and the ruins of a Roman basilica giving the place an interesting history to explore.

The best place for enjoying the sun without a crowd

Today, the only one thing left of that cemetery and it is a neoclassical glory. It is located in the centre of the park Sustipan and it is the most popular place in the park for photographing. This place is really the most romantic in the whole of Split. If you don’t believe, it will convince you during the sunset. Because of beauty, many couples decide exactly in this park have a wedding. Except for natural surroundings, this location is for newlyweds who love to have a ceremony and restaurant close to each other.

San Sustipanske Noći event

I have to mention that this is the place where every summer has held a manifestation called San Sustipanske Noći ( Sustipan Nights). People sit on the grass surrounded by pine trees and enjoying in music – rock, hip hop, alternative, urban hits, etc. More information about this event finds on official Facebook.

On another side of the entrance to the city harbour its located one more beautiful park with lighthouse Pomorac. Read the full article about it here. Also, for all who are looking for relaxation and greenery, don’t miss an opportunity to visit the park Marjan. The sea view was that what really enthused us. On clear days, like this, you can see as far as to the island of Vis and enjoy the perfect view of beautiful channels, coast, and islands. Find out more information here.

Park Maksimir, the largest and the most beautiful Zagreb park

When we are talking about the cities, we are thinking mostly about buildings. As we are living more and more in big cities we more appreciate the greenery. The best things to escape everyday obligations for me are parks. During my living in Berlin, it was Tiergarten, while now in Zagreb it is park Maksimir. The park with a long history is a favorite place for walking, recreation, fun, and holiday in Zagreb.

A place to find your peace and enjoy in nature

Birds chirping, beautiful landscapes, natural scents are all things that relax us from our busy lives. Park Maksimir is a magical world, although on a much smaller surface than it was today, it was created at the end of the 18th century. It is the largest and the most beautiful Zagreb park. Also, it is significant because it contains numerous plants and animal species. More precisely, as many as 100 species of birds who are living in multi-century oak forests. The most famous oak tree in this park has as many as 600 years.

Take a long walk around lakes or visit a nice ZOO in the Park Maksimir

If you walking thought park Maksimir, you will probably see swans swimming in the lake. More precisely, this park beside the forest with 5 lakes, numbered streams, and meadows that contribute to his romance. I can’t forget to mention that there is also a zoo within the park.

A lovely pavilion located on top of a hill

The park is rich in monuments and pavilions. The most recognizable building is the Viewpoint building built in the 19th century by the Franz Schüchta project and is located in the center of the park. I will also mention Mogila, a monument that marks thousands of years of the Croatian Kingdom.

And it’s not Maksimir the only quality oasis of greenery in Zagreb. In the western part of Zagreb, it is Jarun while in neighbourhood Novi Zagreb it is Bundek.

Park Marjan, a great walk up to the Croatian Flag and cross

Last week, my girlfriend and I took a little trip to Park Marjan, the most popular place to escape from the city bustling and chaotic pace of life. In my first three visits to this area, I saw only the beginning of the park with a beautiful view of the whole city Split. But now, we decided to go to the peak of Park Marjan.

With a coffee on the famous square Pjaca, we started our one hour climb up to a peak around 10 am. The adventure started through a passage with a lot of stairs. Actually, after just 5 minutes we had a look at the whole city. It was a point I never went forward anytime before. You can hardly find the better sight of Split’s harbor and old city. Nearby is also a cafe bar Vidilica with a splendid view.

We have continued our journey across trails through fragrant pine forests to scenic lookouts. The track was sometimes very challenging with a large incline. The last and most difficult step before the top was 314 steps. For someone in shape is not a problem, but for us, it was a difficult obstacle.

The highest peak of the Marjan hill

However, the effort was paid when we realized we were at the top, it was truly an indescribable moment. On the highest peak of the Marjan hill is a giant cross that represents the main symbol. The sky was clear and blue that day, which made a wonderful contrast between the sky and the stone cross. We took a break for a few minutes and continued this adventure.

We continued our journey in another direction to find some new thrilling things. It was a beautiful view, perfect for relaxation and of course photo shooting. On clear days, like this, you can see as far as to the island of Vis and enjoy the perfect view of beautiful channels, coasts, and islands.

The trail is extremely wide, a perfect place for walking, jogging, running or riding a bike. Moreover, rocks are also suitable for rock climbing. After more than 20 minutes of walking, we came to a small church of St.Jerome. The church is interesting because it is on the rocks. We tried to come inside but the door was locked (just because of the tourists like us, haha).

Park Marjan as the best place to take a walk and to enjoy an impressive view

Near that church, there is a wall with a bench next to it where we took a rest and just enjoyed nature. The sea view was that what really enthused us. We didn’t meet many people although it was Saturday. While walking, I thought that we were walking through some undiscovered tourist attraction. That also has its pros, and these are piece and quiet to clear your thoughts.

Cheers for reading about our Park Marjan adventure. If you have any questions about the area, tips or the photos, feel free to reach out!
