Top Things to See and Do in Zagreb

Explore the architecture

The old town of Zagreb consists of medieval Gradec (today the home of the Croatian government and parliament) and Kaptol (the seat of the archbishop). Gradec and Kaptol were united in 1851 by ban Josip Jelačić, who was credited for this, with the naming the main city square, Ban Jelačić Square in his honor. If you have the opportunity to travel and choose your new destination and have not visited Zagreb yet, then this is the perfect time to read this Zagreb Travel Guide.

Museums & Galleries

Zagreb has the most museums and galleries in Europe per square meter. That is why Zagreb actually takes the title of the city of museums. From traditional to unusual, Zagreb has more than 30 museums. It is impossible to mention everything, so we made a list of the most important to visit. The most important museum event in Croatia is Noć Muzeja (Night of the Museums) when all museums and galleries are open for free to all visitors.

  • Croatian Museum of Naive Art
  • Museum of Broken Relationships
  • Museum of Illusions
  • Zagreb 80’s Museum

Feel the Pulse of the City

Ban Josip Jelačić Square is the center of the city. All important events are held here. Here are organized sports welcomes and protests. All other streets or squares that make this city always live are located within a radius of 500 meters. One of them is Ilica Street who starts at Ban Jelačič Square in the east and ends more than 5 km to the west. It is the most famous street in the city. It is always full of people (one of the reasons is a large number of shops like ZARA, Kraš chocolate bar, Caldezonia, etc.). Make sure to visit the Vincek ice cream shop.

  • Tkalčićeva
  • Dolac Market

Nature & Parks Attractions

When we are talking about the cities, we are thinking mostly about buildings. As we are living more and more in big cities we more appreciate the greenery. The best things to escape everyday obligations for me are parks. Park Maksimir is the largest and most beautiful park in the city. Also, within the park is located Zagreb ZOO. One of the favorite picnic spots of the inhabitants of Zagreb is Medvednica mountain with its highest peak called Sljeme. Next year, a new cable car will be opened that will connect the city with the top of Medvednica.

The exhibition is set in the large central part of the tunnel that you will reach by passing below a series of curtains. This main part of the tunnel is filled with a multitude of snowy pine trees that together make up the forest. Giant Nutcrackers were nestled between them. The magical idyll is completed by hundreds of colorful toys that covered the ceiling of the tunnel. The Christmas fairy tale in the Grič Tunnel will surely delight the kids like the most magical place of this Advent. For more information, click on the Zagreb Travel Guide article below.

In the last few years, the Zagreb culinary scene has changed a lot. Many new restaurants with very different cuisines have opened but the city still has a lot of traditional restaurants. Cost & Living

Accommodation in Zagreb is getting more expensive every year, and the biggest problem is the lack of apartments for long term rent. If you are coming to this city as a tourist, the average price for an apartment for 4 people is 100 euros per day. Smaller apartments for 2 persons are about 60 euros. If you decide to go to a restaurant, the best choice will be pizza and different types of pasta, with prices ranging from 50 to 70 kuna. Dinner for family (4 people) at local taverns will be paid between 200 and 350 kunas, without appetizers, desserts, and drinks. Prices are the most expensive close to the square Ban Josip Jelačić.

Traveling around Zagreb

The entire public transportation system consists of trams, buses, suburban railway, and funicular railway. Zagreb public transport is managed by the company ZET. Today, trams are the symbols of this city recognizable by their blue color. The bus network consists of more than 400 buses with more than 2000 stops. The suburban railway connects remote parts of the city as well as suburban cities such as Sesvete and Zaprešić. If you are visiting Zagreb, don’t miss the famous Zagreb funicular.

Paper tickets can be purchased at ZET’s ticket offices or at kiosks or from drivers in vehicles. I recommend buying a Prepaid card ZET. After entering the vehicle, you need to put the card on the machine and you will automatically be charged. Also, ZET offers 3-day and 7-day tickets.

  • Single fare ticket (30 minutes): 4-6 kuna (if you buy from the driver the price is higher)
  • Single fare ticket (60 minutes): 7-10 kuna (if you buy from the driver the price is higher)
  • Single fare ticket (90 minutes): 10-15 kuna (if you buy from the driver the price is higher)
  • Single fare ticket during the night: 15 kuna
  • Funicular ticket – one way: 5 kuna
  • Three-Day-Ticket for one Person: 70 kuna
  • Seven-Day-Ticket for one Person: 150 kuna
  • Fifteen-Day-Ticket for one Person: 200 kuna
  • Thirty-Day-Ticket for one Person: 400 kuna
  • Bike Rental: around 100 kuna/day

Zagreb Weather

Zagreb has an oceanic climate, also known as a marine climate. Summers are warm with average temperatures between 22-27 degrees Celsius. However, depending on the year, it sometimes happens that temperatures are around 35 degrees in the hottest part of summer. During the summer are frequent afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Also, spring and autumn are relatively warm (expect daily temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius).

During winter, prepare for the fog. Temperatures are usually between 0 and 7 degrees Celsius from December to February. With 840 mm of precipitation per year, Zagreb is Europe’s 9th wettest capital. Most precipitation falls over summer and high temperatures.

  • The hottest month is July, with an average high of 26.7°C (80.1°F)
  • The coldest month is January, with an average high of 3.7°C (38.7°F)
