Robert Koch Institute: Germany has put two Dalmatian counties on its red list

The German Robert Koch Institute has added two Dalmatian counties on its red list. Due to the increased number of new cases of coronavirus infection, the Šibenik-Knin and Split-Dalmatia counties are on the red list. Islands along the coast such as Brač or Hvar are also influenced by the classification as a risk area, but not the northern coastal areas with Istria and the areas around Zadar and the southern coast with the city of Dubrovnik.

Croatia joins UK quarantine ‘red list’

The BBC has just announced that Croatia could be the next country to end up on the British red list. British government ministers are meeting in London this afternoon to discuss changes to Britain’s list of safe travel corridors, the BBC reported. Such a decision could follow similar decisions made for travelers returning from Spain, France, and Malta.

Today, during the afternoon, speculations were confirmed. From Saturday, everyone entering Britain from Croatia will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine!

The map – Germany has put two Dalmatian counties on its red list

This warning doesn’t mean anything good for Croatian tourism: especially when it comes to the south of the Adriatic and when it comes to the Germans, the season is over. During this year, there were only 50% of guests compared to last year. By mid-June, there was almost no one. But since then the numbers have become much better. During August, there were about 70% of guests compared to 2019.

The director of the Croatian headquarters for tourism in Frankfurt, Romeo Draghicchio, says that Croatian tourism fears a general warning for travel: “It would hit us hard: Germans are our number one guest.” There are currently about 180,000 guests from Germany in Croatia, but most of them are in the north, in Istria, Kvarner and the islands there. Draghicchio recalls that there are relatively few active cases of coronavirus.

Croatian Minister of Health: We will start testing more

“Today, 1653 people have been tested, which is a significant number. We will certainly increase the number of tests in the immediate period ahead because we want to protect the health and social care system. The increase in the number of tests has been shown to be effective in preventing the spread of the infection. Also, the Croatian Minister of Health, Vili Beroš, says: “Now, in the autumn, we will change the strategy a bit and increase the number of tests”.

Slovenia puts Croatia on the list of red countries

“The situation in Croatia is so bad that we have no choice but to call on our citizens to return to Slovenia as soon as possible. Things are getting worse quickly and it will be much worse,” Slovenian government spokesman Jelko Kacin said. He added that Slovenes who are now in Croatia will have “enough” time to return home and avoid quarantine, but also to avoid traffic jams and crowds at the border.

Interestingly, Kacin is spending the summer in his house in Klimno on the island of Krk for years. Last week, after a statement warning of an increase in new infections in Croatia, Kacin returned to Krk, apparently not in the least afraid of the “Croatian coronavirus”.

Valamar Hotels provided a free test on Covid-19 to Austrian guests

This year, 28,000 guests from Austria stayed in Valamar hotels and camps, mostly in the northern Adriatic in Istria and Kvarner. These destinations have recorded a particularly low number of cases since the beginning of the epidemic, Valamar reports. Moreover, no cases of infection have been reported among Valamar guests since the beginning of the epidemic. Since Austria has introduced mandatory COVID-19 testing on return from Croatia, Valamar has provided a free Covid-19 test or a 100€ discount per person for testing in Austria.

Vučedol Culture Museum

At about 1,200 square meters, in 19 rooms, archeological finds are displayed at one of the most important archeological sites in Europe, Vučedol. The first investigations of the site date back to 1897. This attractive location was first inhabited in about 6,000 B.C. at the time of the first farmers, and more or less it was inhabited intensively through the whole of prehistory. The period between 3,350 – 2,300 B.C. was the most intensive period of its existence and in that period it was undoubtedly the most significant European center. Since this was also the time of the early settlements of Troy (Troy I and II) many analogies can also be found with the archaeological material from Vučedol.

Odescalchi Castle

Odescalchi Castle was built during the 18th and 19th centuries and contains parts of the walls of a medieval castle that were already rebuilt by the Turks. The castle served as a summer residence for the princes. It was probably built at the beginning of the 18th century (1721?). During the Second World War, the castle was used mainly for military purposes. In 1948 it was already empty and destroyed. Since 1969, the castle has housed the Ilok City Museum and a picture gallery. Next to the castle in the 18th century, there was a garden, and from the end of the 19th century a park, which is not surprising because the tradition of gardens has existed here since the Turkish era.

Ilok wine cellars

The old wine cellars date back to the 15th and 18th centuries. It is interesting that the famous Ilok Traminac was ordered by the English Court for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Also, one interesting story coming from one of the employees who save a place during the Homeland War, more precisely during the Serbian occupation of Ilok, when he decided to enclose the wall of one part of the Old Cellar and store it as many as 8,000 most valuable archival wines. Without him, today Ilok wine cellars couldn’t talk to the tourists about the story of archival wine collection from the Old Cellar.

Croatia is the 49th richest country in the world

Croatia is the 49th richest country in the world if we can believe the analysis of the Work + Money portal. The portal is part of the range of relatively young publishing startup Granite Media founded in 2017 in San Francisco. Their global wealth research partner, the Social Progress Imperative, is led by economist Michael Green, co-author of the book “A New Capitalism for a Big Society“, a former high-ranking official in British The Department for International Development and a professor at the University of Warsaw.

Wealth can be measured in different ways, writes Justin Cupler in the introduction to the W + M scale. Someone observes it solely through money, others will observe the overall quality of life. So it is with people.

Croatia is the 49th richest country in the world

“Croatia is not a country many will look at when thinking about wealth, and we can’t fault them with its $60.8 billion GDP ranking No. 78 in the world and its $10,314 average salary ranking No. 94. Where Croatia makes up ground is its No. 37 SPI ranking, which helps it land at No. 49 on our list of wealthiest nations. This SPI ranking gets boosts from high scores in clean water and sanitation, access to basic medical care, and access to basic knowledge. Like other European nations, Croatia struggles in inclusiveness (47.84 points) and access to advanced education (49.31), which pulls its overall score down a fair amount.”

  • GDP Rank: 78
  • Average Income Rank: 94
  • Social Progress Index Rank: 37
  • Average Rank: 69.3

Germany is the richest country?

With the fourth largest GDP in the world, and 17th in terms of annual employee income, but with a very high index of social progress that includes easy access to quality education and health care system (with self-evident criteria such as electrification and accessible drinking water) the strongest European the economy is also the country of the highest quality (richest in quality) of life.

At the top of the rankings, there are generally no surprises, unless we consider the Italian ranking (15th) ahead of the Austrian. The US, although first in terms of GDP, is only third, due to increasing social stratification, poorly resolved health care and a low level of personal security.

Slovenia in a high 30th place

Slovenia is ranked 30th. It is interesting that Slovenia is better than Qatar, which is in 33rd place. Also, Qatar is a country that was among the top ten in terms of GDP per capita in most world rankings in 2018, and the first when we measure the purchasing power of citizens. Slovenia’s average annual salary of $ 37,322 (gross) is $ 364 higher than Qatar’s. This is not the reason why Slovenia is financially richer than Qatar, but Slovenia stands out far in terms of social rights, class equality, as well as a balanced approach to the health system and quality education.

In the end, Croatia is the 49th richest country in the world but it can be much better. The reason why why we are behind our neighbors is the amount of the average net salary.

FAQ

Is it safe to travel to Croatia?

Is it safe to travel to Croatia? The answer is YES! Sometimes tourists ask me what is happening with the war in Croatia. Actually, the war ended more than 30 years ago. According to data from 2020, Croatia is the 49th richest country in the world! Foreign citizens who come to live in Croatia point out that security is one of the things they value most in that country. It was inconceivable to many people in their countries that they could walk the streets at night without fearing for their safety. You don’t have to be afraid in Croatia!

Crime Index of Croatia – 24

On the Numbeo website, you can check the security in any city or country in the world (link). According to their data, Croatia has a Crime Index 24.58, which ranks it among the cities with low levels of crime. Cities and countries with less than 20 are considered very low, between 20 and 40 as low, between 40 and 60 as moderate, between 60 and 80 as high and at the end of the crime level more than 80 as very high.

Croatia is a safe country, but if we are talking about terrorism, there is a certain level of general danger. The fact that Croatia is a member of Euro-Atlantic organizations means that it is a target. There is no country in the world that is safe from terrorism today. Only the Eskimos and the inhabitants of the Tongan archipelago are safe.

Travel Risk Map by International SOS and Control risk website

In terms of security, Croatia is rated as a low-risk country, according to the International SOS and Control risk website. The map of International SOS, designed by medical and safety experts, shows the current risk ratings of all countries in an overview. You can find the map here.

  • ROAD SAFETY RISK <10 (Mortality rate per 100 000 population)

Conclusion – Is it safe to travel to Croatia?

If you think that security is one of the most important things when moving to Croatia (or traveling), then I think you don’t need to worry so much. In 2018, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković highlighted security as one of the key advantages of Croatia for those who visit it. He also praised the police for reducing crime. The city of Samobor has the lowest rate of violence, drug abuse, and traffic accidents in Croatia. The highest rate is in the city of Split. Austria puts Croatia on the list of risk countries for travel

On Friday, the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned its citizens to not travel to Croatia due to the possibility of coronavirus infection. The ministry announced on Friday that the warning would be valid from August 17th. Austria fears the return of its citizens from a holiday in Croatia, which on Thursday recorded a record number of newly infected – 282, could intensify the spread of coronavirus on its territory.

Croatia reports biggest daily jump in coronavirus infections – End of tourist season?

Health Minister Vili Beros said: “The tourist season is in full swing, 830 thousand tourists are in our country and an increase in the number was to be expected. It is not possible to predict exactly how much. However, it is important to note that in some counties, such as Split-Dalmatia and the City of Zagreb, the number of new cases is significantly large. But we have four counties with only one new patient, we have 14 counties with less than 10 new patients.

The most important thing is that everything is under control and that we know the source of the infection. It is necessary to constantly emphasize that we ourselves, with our caution and effort, can contribute to reducing the spread of the infection. That is what is important to say at this moment.”

Also, he said: “We have enabled life and tourism. Without tourism, which is one of the more important branches of our economy, everything would be far worse. We have purposefully accepted this risk. I spoke this morning with my Slovenian and Austrian colleagues, in a way we are all on the same track. The tourist season is now coming to an end and we need to turn to autumn, turn to the beginning of the school year.”

Top 5 largest construction sites in Croatia in 2020

We have already written about large investments in railways in Croatia, but now we bring you the 5 largest construction sites in Croatia in 2020. Infrastructure projects worth HRK 25 billion kunas are being implemented throughout Croatia. For some, EU funds have just been approved, while others are in a high phase of construction. Below are the four largest projects worth around 5.5 billion kunas, plus a concession for the Zagreb Deep Sea Container Terminal, which will start in the next two months.

Construction of D-403 road

It is a road about 3 km long that will enable faster delivery and unloading of cargo to the port of Rijeka and open a completely new entrance to the center of Rijeka. The value of the construction is HRK 456.3 million. The project includes the construction of several buildings, the most significant of which are: the Podmurvice tunnel (approx. 1253 m), the Piopi viaduct (approx. 316 m), the Mlaka viaduct (approx. 144 m) and one 56 m long underpass. Without this road, further development of the Port of Rijeka is almost impossible.

Next month, the companies Kolektor from Slovenia, GP Krk from Croatia, and Euro-Asfalt from Bosnia and Herzegovina will be introduced to the work on the construction site. The deadline for the completion of construction is 36 months.

Zagreb Deep Sea Container Terminal

The Port of Rijeka is the largest seaport in Croatia and the second-largest economic center. Due to its strategic position, it has always been regarded as an important gateway to the CE and SEE. On September 9, the deadline for the Port of Rijeka Authority to make one of the most important decisions in its history expires – who will receive a concession for the development and management of the Zagreb Deep Sea container terminal for the next 50 years.

Two offers have arrived. The first is a Chinese consortium consisting of Ningbo Zhoushan Port, Tianjin Port Overseas and China Road and Bridge Corporation offered a permanent annual concession fee of 2m euros, with a commitment to complete the construction of the second phase in five years. The second offer consists of the Dutch company APM Terminal BV and the Croatian company Enna Logic (PPD). Their concession fee is lower than the first offer – 1m euros a year. Also, they offered the completion of the second phase of construction of the terminal for 10 years.

Railway Hrvatski Leskovac – Karlovac

The value of the construction is estimated at 2.3 billion kuna without VAT, making this section the most expensive new railway in Croatia. The section is 44 kilometers long. In addition to the reconstruction and renovation of the existing railway and the construction of the second track, the reconstruction of the Hrvatski Leskovac, Jastrebarsko and Karlovac stations is also planned. The reconstruction of the railway includes the renovation and modernization of stable electric traction facilities, signaling and safety and telecommunication devices.

Railway Križevci – Koprivnica – Hungarian border

This project is very interesting because it has a higher value than the value of the Pelješac bridge. The railway is part of the Mediterranean corridor worth over HRK 3 billion. The works will include the construction of a new track and the reconstruction of an existing one. 43-kilometer long railway line will enable the speed of 160 km/h. The contractor for this project is Turkish company Cengiz Insaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A. S. The contract was signed in 2019 and the project deadline is 42 months.

New ring-road at Novi Vinodolski

The new ring-road of the town of Novi Vinodolski is only 9.8 kilometers long. In addition to the route itself, the 834-meter-long Zagora tunnel and the Ričina viaduct (1,062 meters) will have to be built. Part of the ring-road, the 6.5-kilometer-long Selce-Novi Vinodolski section, is an integral part of the future Križišće-Žuta Lokva highway. The deadline for completion is 24 months. The construction of the ring road will be financed by Croatian Motorways Ltd from its own funds, without new credit indebtedness.

Tourist season 2020 has new records – around a million visitors on holiday in Croatia. More precisely, according to the Croatian Tourism Association, between 950,000 and one million guests are on holiday this weekend. This would mean that the second weekend of August is very close to last year when there were 1.1 million tourists in Croatia. At one point, the convoy of cars was about 16 kilometers long.

Crowds all over Croatia

By noon on Saturday, 25,771 vehicles entered the Lučko toll station, or only 2,5 percent less than on the same Saturday last year. Ship passenger traffic in the City Port of Split in the last two weekends is at about 65 percent of traffic compared to comparable weekends last year. 70,000 passengers and 16,000 vehicles are expected this weekend, which is about 70 percent of the traffic compared to the comparable weekend last year. About 30,000 passengers with about 160 landings will pass through Split Airport this weekend. At 3 border crossings in Istria: Plovanija, Kaštel, and Požane, from Friday to Sunday at 12 o’clock, 133,840 passengers entered Croatia, including 123,296 foreigners, which is the busiest weekend this summer.
