Quiz: How much do you know about Zagreb?

How much do you know about Zagreb? Did you know that the Zagreb funicular, which connects Donji grad with Gornji from Tomićeva Street, is the shortest railway in the world intended for public transport? Its track is only 66 meters long, and the ride from bottom to the top takes 64 seconds. Or maybe, that Zagreb still doesn’t have a million inhabitants. Okay, this is enough to start with, and now let’s go to the quiz!

START HERE

Some facts – How much do you know about Zagreb?

  • The people of Zagreb have been enjoying beer since the 14th century. It was first produced by fellow citizens of German descent. The first beer was drunk in today’s Basaričekova Street in Gornji Grad. At that time, the street was called Pivarska Street. The first real brewery opened in 1879.
  • The shortest street in Zagreb is Novodvorska Street. Only twenty-two steps are enough to cross this street along its entire length. This street is located in Zagreb’s Trešnjevka district and consists of two houses and one building with street numbers 2, 3, and 5.
  • If you want to meet someone in the center of Zagreb, which place do you choose for that meeting? Certainly like most Zagreb citizens and their guests – Ban Josip Jelačić Square, under the clock. All city clocks are repaired and maintained by the watchmaker Lebarović from Maksimir, which includes as many as six generations of masters. The first city clocks were imported from Austria.

Lovers of nature, delicious street food snacks, and refreshing drinks have finally got a new edition of the Food Truck Festival Zagreb. In general, this is the first Croatian festival of food trucks where visitors will enjoy the beautifully decorated themed summer green oases, family, kid’s, sports, and chill picnic areas with a rich gastronomic offer of trucks and live performances by street bands.

About Food Truck Festival Zagreb

The Food Truck Festival is held on the “Zagreb Sea” called Jarun, right next to the Aquarius club with a variety of delicious snacks, craft beers, colorful cocktails, and dancing music. The Food Truck Festival is divided into four zones: Food on Wheels, Drinks on Wheels, Music on Wheels, and Chill Zones.

Colorful chill zones produced by the hands of small craftsmen will delight all lovers of nature and hedonism. The most interesting is perhaps the colorful booths made of car tires and wooden pallets. Where to eat & drink in Zagreb

In the last few years, the Zagreb culinary scene has changed a lot. Many new restaurants with very different cuisines have opened but the city still has a lot of traditional restaurants. If you are looking for local food I would recommend one of the oldest restaurants in the city, Kaptolska let. During my stay in this city, I visited some restaurants and cafes and wrote reviews about them. More information on Zagreb Travel Guide.

Split Spring Festival – gastronomy, relaxation and live music

We visited the second edition of the popular street food festival in Split – Split Spring Festival. Like the first time, it is held in Đardin Park, near the walls of Diocletian’s Palace. The entire park will be arranged as a relaxing daily picnic area with various painting corners, children’s zone of Baby Center, a reading corner, but also a Pet corner where you can learn all about the adoption of abandoned dogs. Also, there will be daily performances of jazz, blues, and RnB performers in the evening.

About Split Spring Festival

It is a modern spring cultural-gastro outdoor festival for tourists and local residents. It is held in the most beautiful Split park in the city center, Đardin. At Split Spring, there’s something for everyone: fun, food, picnic, music, culture, and most of all – an amazing atmosphere.

Find out more information about Split Spring Festival on:

Some of the most creative and most popular Split restaurants and bistros will be preparing street food – Šug restaurant, ArtiČok, Mist, Mazgoon, Maka Make, Biberon sushi, Fabrique, Kabinet, Biberon Maestro, and guests from Varaždin – American bar Dollar.

  • American bar Dollar from Varaždin offers all kinds of fine burgers. Our first stop at this festival. A special hit is Cheese Dollar with breaded cheese, Double trouble with a double burger and breaded onion, and Sweet billy with caramelized onion.
  • Artičok – favorite Split gastro destination. They offer various variants of “special sandwiches” such as pulled pork with apple chutney, smoked beef breast with coleslaw, hummus, and coulis, and glazed beef shank with mayonnaise with rosemary and pickled onion.
  • Maka Maka – This food stall represents healthy street food. You can taste a variety of fresh juices, smoothies, and fine cocktails.
  • Mazzgoon – This bar was full of people throughout our stay at this festival. They offer a Cubano sandwich, a bao bun with a belly, their Tony special burger, and an Ebi katsu sandwich. I must point out that the offer is extremely original and different from the traditional gastronomic offer in Split.
  • Šug – You can taste a shrimp broth, macaroni with salsa, and shrimp Pâté. We tasted deer with macaroni. Very tasty, interesting, and our best food stall at the festival.
  • Fabrique – Favorite grill location in Split.
  • Biberon sushi – Tastes of Asia in Split. Since Asia is the world’s most famous street food destination, this food stall will surely be interesting to you.
  • Maestro – Taste čevčići, gourmet burger, and the definite favorite – the neck of a black Slavonian pig.
  • Kabinet – We recommend tasting the traditional Croatian dish sarma, director’s steak, breaded cheese, and “thick pepper” – breaded pepper with cheese.
  • Misto – taste a traditional Dalmatian specialty in a special way such as street food pasticada, broth, fish, and veggie burgers.

Where is Croatia located? Frequently Asked Questions

A highly searched term on internet search engines about Croatia is: Where is Croatia located? For many a stupid question, but for example, a lot of people think that Croatia is part of Russia or don’t know that Croatia is in Europe. Therefore, in this article, we will explain in the best way the geographical position of this small country with just over 4 million inhabitants.

Where is Croatia located?

Croatia is described as a part of Central Europe and Southeast Europe, a part of the Balkans and Middle Europe. It bordered by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia in the east, Slovenia in the west, Hungary in the north, and Montenegro and the Adriatic Sea in the south. Half of the territory of Croatia is located in the Pannonian-Peripannonian area, a third in the coastal or Adriatic part, while the rest is mountainous or Dinaric area. Croatia is located in the northern hemisphere between 42 ° 23 ′ and 46 ° 33 ′ north latitude, and 13 ° 30 ′ and 19 ° 27 ′ east longitude. Croatia belongs to the lower part of the list of medium-sized European countries. Specifically, it ranks 124th in the world.

The total length of land borders is 2028 km. The sea coastline is 5835.3 km long. The distance from Savudrija to Cape Oštro is 527 km, so the indentation coefficient of the Croatian part of the Adriatic coast is 11.1, which ranks the Croatian coast among the most indented in the world. Moreover, Croatia has the second most indented coastline in Europe. Out of 1246 Adriatic islands, islets, cliffs, and reefs, 1185 are located in Croatia. Of that number, 718 are islands, with only 66 inhabited. The largest island is Cres with an area of 405.8 km², followed by Krk with an area of 405.78 km².

Is Croatia in the EU? The answer is YES!

The Republic of Croatia has been a member of the European Union since 1 July 2013. The country applied for EU membership in 2003, and the European Commission recommended making it an official candidate in early 2004. Candidate country status was granted to Croatia by the European Council in mid-2004. The entry negotiations, while originally set for March 2005, began in October that year together with the screening process. The accession process of Croatia was complicated by the insistence of Slovenia, an EU member state, that the two countries’ border issues be dealt with prior to Croatia’s accession to the EU. Croatian public opinion was generally supportive of the EU accession process, despite occasional spikes in Euroscepticism.

Is Zagreb safe for a living and for travel?

Is Zagreb safe for a living? I would say that Zagreb is very safe. Probably one of the safest European capitals. There are no gangs or organized crime groups in the city, and the overall crime rate is low. If you are interested in crime statistics, you can check below. The children walk to school alone. They also ride bikes both day and night and parents don’t care about them at all. In general, people feel safe enough to walk alone at night in every part of the city.

Is Zagreb safe for tourists?

The answer to this question is definitely yes. Zagreb is still not a big tourist destination like cities on the sea. Specifically, tourism started to develop only a few years ago. Therefore, you will be able to enjoy and be safe near all the most important tourist attractions. Purse thefts are rare. Most Croats speak some foreign languages (mostly English and German) and will help you in case of necessity. Older people speak foreign languages poorly, but if you need any information, Croats in their 20s or 30s will certainly help you. Zagreb has almost no refugees or any other people that some would consider dangerous.

Crime Index of Zagreb – 22

On the Numbeo website, you can check the security in any city in the world (link). According to their data, Zagreb has a Crime Index 22.17, which ranks it among the cities with low levels of crime. Cities with less than 20 are considered very low, between 20 and 40 as low, between 40 and 60 as moderate, between 60 and 80 as high and at the end of the crime level more than 80 as very high. These are:

Scholarships to Study Abroad in Croatia

If you are looking for scholarships to study in Croatia, in this article you will find out everything you need. There are various scholarships to study abroad in Croatia but the most famous is definitely the Erasmus + program. More information below!

Erasmus+ and Erasmus Mundus

The most popular student exchange program in the European Union. I have been 2 times on the Erasmus internship. First time in Germany and the second time in the Netherlands (my first article the new experience and benefits of this program: “My first working day in the Netherlands as an architect“).

With the Erasmus + program, you receive a scholarship every month. The amount of the scholarship depends on whether you are going to study or do an internship. If you go to study then it is usually between 400-500 euros per month while for an internship it is about 100 euros more. Your home university determines the exact amount according to the guidelines of the European Commission. As an Erasmus + student, you are exempt from paying tuition at the host university.

The conditions for student exchange are prescribed in bilateral agreements between universities. This means that if you want to apply for Erasmus + to study in Croatia, you will be a guest student at a partner university with which your home university has signed an Erasmus + contract. If you go to an internship, the procedure is a little easier, but you have to find an employer in the country where you want to work. If you need advice or help, feel free to email me.

Erasmus + provides scholarships for periods of study and internship abroad for three to twelve months (study only) or for two to twelve months (internship only). At each stage of your studies, you have the opportunity for a total of twelve months of Erasmus + funding.

CEEPUS Scholarships

CEEPUS is a Central European exchange program for university studies. The program began on December 1, 1994, while Croatia signed the CEEPUS Agreement in 1995. In addition to Croatia, the following countries traditionally participate in the program: Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Serbia.

Mobility categories – The program consists of a total of four categories, depending on the category of scholarship recipients and the purpose of mobility. The first is students who want to achieve semester mobility (duration of this type of mobility at least three months). The second is short-term students who want to achieve mobility for the purpose of research for the final work/dissertation (the minimum duration of this type of mobility is one month). The third is the teacher, where the teaching staff applies for the purpose of holding classes / mentoring work in the host institution and developing inter-university cooperation. And the last is a short-term excursion for participants of short group mobility (for example, summer schools).

Each country determines the amounts of scholarships for each category. Also, each country determines rights such as free accommodation, subsidized meals, health insurance, etc. Scholarships depend on the standard of living in each country and must be sufficient for mobility needs.

Vinkovci is the oldest town in Europe and birthplace of Roman emperors

Did you know that Vinkovci is the oldest town in Europe and the birthplace of Roman emperors? Vinkovci has been continuously inhabited from the Neolithic to the present day. That’s a total of more than 8 thousand years. Most of the prehistoric settlements are located on the left bank of the river Bosut. In ancient times, Colonia Aurelia Cibalae was the third-largest city in the province of Pannonia Secunda (today’s area of Slavonia, Srijem and Baranja).

Vinkovci is the oldest town in Europe

Vinkovci is the oldest European city and the oldest urban settlement. It is a place where people have lived continuously for more than 8300 years. Zagreb archaeologist, prof. dr. sc. Alexander Durman announced in 2012 that he would prove it. During the excavation of the foundations of the Hotel Slavonija, he found the findings of the Starčevo culture and dated them to 6300 BC using scientific methods. There are also older cities, but no one other than Vinkovci has had the continuity of living in the same area all those thousands of years.

The oldest kiln for firing ceramics in Europe was found near the site of the Sopot culture (5050 – 3950 BC). Also, the existence of the drum-salkuca-lasinja culture (3500 BC), and finally the Vučedol culture (3000 BC) and the Vinkovci culture (2300 BC) has been proven. This is followed by finds from the Late Bronze and Iron Ages. In Roman times, Vinkovci was called Colonia Aurelia Cibalae. Slavic cremation graves (7th century) were discovered at the same archeological site, followed by the findings of the later Bijelo Brdo culture on Meraja, where the early medieval settlement of Sveti Ilija was located.

Ancient silver

In 2012, during archeological excavations in the center of Vinkovci, a hoard of Roman silver vessels was found. According to experts, this is one of the most important finds in late antique archeology in the new millennium. More precisely, a hoard of late antique silver of this type was last found at least 50 years ago, when the famous Seus treasure was found. The hoard consists of 46 items, of which 45 are silver and one is an undecorated gem (an insert for a ring made of semi-precious Onyx stone).

Roman emperors Valentinian and Valens

Flavius Valentinian, known as Valentinian I (born 321, died November 17, 375), was a Western Roman emperor from 364 to 375. He was born in Cibalae, Lower Pannonia, and was the son of a successful military leader. He ruled the western part of the Empire and Illyricum, choosing Milan as its seat. He also appointed his brother Valens to be co-emperor. Valens was assigned to rule the Eastern part of the empire. He stopped several barbarian burglaries (in Gaul, Britain, and Africa). He died in Pannonia where he went to defend the frontier from the incursions of the Sarmatians and other barbarian tribes. In domestic politics, he tried to improve the economy and combat bribery.

MORE INFORMATION Wikipedia

His brother Flavius Valens, known as Valens, was born in 328 also in Cibalae. After the death of Valentinian I, he became his successor. He died August 9, 378, at the battles of Adrianople. Convinced of his numerical superiority even though the forces were equal, he decides to attack the Goths himself. He lost the battle as well as his life. After that, the barbarians were able to plunder the Balkans again.
