Top shopping places in Split

Top shopping places in Split. What a city of Split apart from the fantastic architecture, restaurants, cafes, excursions, and nightlife can offer? One of the answers is shopping. Probably one of the best options to spend a day in Split if you are on vacation on a rainy day. The biggest advantage of coming during the summer months is that most stores have seasonal discounts that are sometimes up to 70% cheaper.

List of shopping places in Split:

Mall of Split

The largest shopping center in Dalmatia with over one hundred shops. It is a large and varied offer of clothing, footwear, a large number of cafes and restaurants. I will mention only some of the brands such as Zara, Zara Home, Stradivarius, Berisha, Sinsay, House, Croop, Hervis, Nike, Massimo Dutti, Mango, Swarovski, etc. A full list of stores can be found here. Very interesting are the cafe bars on top with a great view. We were delighted with the cafe bar Cinema as a part of the CineStar 4DXTM cinema (more about it here). In 2018, Mall of Split won the prestigious ICTA Award in Barcelona for the best cinema in Europe.

This center is located in the eastern part of the city on Vukovar Street. It is about 10 kilometers from the city center. If you don’t have a car, and you don’t want to use a taxi there is a free bus for all visitors.

City Center one Split

Continuing on the same street where is located Mall of Split has located the second largest shopping center in Split. They have a couple of brands you will not find in Mall in Split such as Müller, dm, Peek & Cloppenburg, H&M, C&A. The advantage of this center is obviously in an organization that is much easier, while the biggest disadvantage is the poor choice of cafe bars. Surely all you need you will find in these 2 shopping centers.

Marmontova street

This street is the most important shopping oasis in the city center. I suggest if you are staying in Split very shortly because it is right next to Diocletian’s Palace. Probably you’ll walk down the street during a tour of the city. The main offer consists of Zara, Tommy Hilfiger, Bershka, Intimissimi, Massimo Dutti, Kruna Mode and Guess.

Joker Mall

Although the oldest of all Split shopping centers, Joker Mall has the best position for resident inhabitants who live in the center and tourists. This shopping center is smaller than the first two and therefore there are many smaller brands. The choice of shops is more than satisfying as the bars for the break.

For the end, which shopping places in Split are your favourite?

Papa’s American Bar, perfect burgers on the beach

On the most famous beach in Split is located the Papa’s American Bar for all American food lovers. This is a place that calls for relaxed socializing in excellent American specialities with a pleasant ambience and atmosphere.

American style bar

The interior is made in true American style with walls covered with numerous paintings and installations of American icons. I would mention a large number of vehicle registration plates of the United States. Probably the most attention attracts bull sculpture on the terrace of the building.

Near the Bačvice beach

I have already mentioned that this restaurant is located on the beach, which is one of the advantages of this place. First of all, you will be able to take a break for lunch during the whole day to stay on the beach. For this reason, the terrace has a much larger surface than the enclosed part of the restaurant itself.

Papa’s American Bar Menu

The main offer is based on American classics such as burgers, sandwiches, salads, or homemade potatoes. I would point out that they are using a large number of homemade fresh ingredients. Moreover, the greatest pride of this place is the meat that they are doing themselves. My favorite burger has the same name as the restaurant itself – Papa’s burger. In addition to standard drinks, there are various cocktails on offer. In addition, if you are in the city of Split then you must try a popular local drink called Pipi (read more about that popular drink here).

Papa’s American Bar Zagreb

It’s important to mention that this brand of restaurants already has its own restaurant. Actually,  their first restaurant is opened to one of the most beautiful locations in Zagreb. In the end, Papa’s American Bar is a place where you can hang out with your friends, family, and with your love partner having a wonderful dinner in candlelight and with a view of the beautiful Croatian sea. And I’m sure that you will be happy to come back here every time.

Where to eat & drink in Split?

Ivan Meštrović Gallery opened my eyes to the world of sculpture

When you were researching what to visit during your vacation in Split, you have probably seen photos of the Grgur Ninski monument near the Golden Gate of the Diocletian’s Palace. This huge statue is most interesting on the golden toe that brings happiness to anyone touched. The author of this work is one of the most important Croatian artists Ivan Meštrović. Numerous artist’s masterpieces are located just a few kilometers from the center of Split, in the Ivan Meštrović Gallery. Especially if you are a fan of art, then you must visit this attraction.

The view overlooking the sea is stunning

One of the most important features of this impressive villa is the view of the sea and islands. Also, above the villa is the most beautiful and largest park in Split, Park Marjan (read more about it here). The entrance to the building is located on the south side. There is a large wall with the main entrance door and 2 auxiliary buildings. Approaching the building you will notice a large symmetry in the facade. Right in the middle, there is a beautiful porch with high Ionic columns.

The main goal of the gallery is to preserve and promote the work and life of Ivan Meštrović. On the ground floor, you will be most impressed by the exhibition hall on the east side with the Adam and Eve sculptures. Also, on the first floor, you will find numerous statues under the influence of the Secession, Art Deco, and Impressionism. In addition to the sculptures, you will find many of Meštrović’s drawings during the tour.

Opened my eyes to the world of sculpture

However, originally villa was built by Meštrović himself from 1931 to 1939. Except for the villa, according to the instructions of Ivan Meštrović, it is regulated the garden horticulture.  However, his family enjoyed little living in it, more precisely until the beginning of the war. After that, the villa was given to the Croatian people.

This space has not only gallery purposes. It is a place for numerous music and theatre events during the summer. Also, Ivan meštrović Gallery as a wedding venue is becoming more popular every year. Good luck happy couple!

BEPA! is a restaurant that combines fish with modern fast food

Restaurant BEPA! is located close to the center of the city Split. More precisely at the People’s Square, which is called Pjaca among the local population. This square has been a meeting and gathering place in the past. It’s the same today when it’s filled with many bars, restaurants, and shops. One of these restaurants is BEPA! which is not primarily a classic restaurant, it is a street food restaurant.

Bepa! offer

The restaurant’s offer is based on the traditional cuisine of Mediterranean taverns, trying to connect traditionally and creatively. Moreover, the main feature of this restaurant is to combine fish with modern fast food. That means you will have the opportunity to try a tuna burger or sesame tuna salad. Also, they have in the menu sardines and octopus. My recommendation is to try the Mediterranean Grilled Seabass.

This is the place for a quick breakfast

My favorite time to visit this place is definitely through the morning. While the city is still awake, during the morning the square is partially empty. This is the main reason why to sit on the terrace and to drink the first coffee of the day. For those who want to have breakfast, the offer also includes Omelet du Bepa, Breakfast Burger, Poached a la Avocado and Pancakes.

The blueberry pie is a must for dessert

There are also home-made desserts such as blueberry pie, la bombaaaaa, cheesecake and an ice-cream sandwich. The offer in this restaurant is changing every tourist season. During the summer you will have the chance to try some of the popular cocktails while in the winter mulled wine and other Advent specialties.

The design of the restaurant follows the design of traditional taverns. That’s the reason why they are using wooden chairs and tables. Also, much effort has been invested in branding. We were also surprised by the innovative ordering via a tablet. The biggest criticism of this restaurant going to the relatively small tables as well as the very small space inside the building.

Where to buy a wonderful flower box in Split?

At least once a year, we find ourselves in a situation where we have to give something to people who mean a lot to us in our lives. Especially if it is a female person, then with the flower box you will not make a mistake. This box with roses will be grateful for any occasion. It is most often intended for congratulations on the occasion of an anniversary, diploma, moving into a new home or an important life event.

This year I was in the situation of what to give to girlfriend for her birthday. I decided to buy a flower box because she loves flowers. Then the biggest question was where to buy and which flower shop to choose. For all who will be in a similar situation in the future, I made a list of the best floral shops in Split.

Flower shop Anda

This flower shop is located in 2 shopping centres – Prima 3 and the Mall of Split. Actually, Mall is the largest shopping center in Split, read more about it here. The main activity is selling and arranging flowers, wedding decorations and other occasions. It is very important to note that all the products are available on the website. There is also possible to order online. I was ordering here two years ago and they gave me a very good impression. Find out more about flower shop Anda in Split on Facebook.

Flower shop Strelitzia

When we get back to the beginning of the text and ask me what flower shop I chose, the answer is exactly this. The decision fell on a flower box with red roses that unequivocally express love, courage, and fire. Every recommendation for quality and price, and delivery on time. If you are wondering where to buy a flower box, I recommend this place. In addition, a rating of 4.9 out of maximum 5 with a total of 50 reviews says that it is perhaps the best flower shop in Split. Also, find out more about flower shop Strelitzia on an official website or on Facebook.

Do you know another place where you can buy a flower box?

Unfortunately, here ends my search for flower boxes. The reason is, above all, that Split is a relatively small city. Actually, for a much larger offer you have to go to Zagreb. Of course, if is some new place opened or there is some other flower shop who I didn’t mention I would ask you to write it in the comment.

Gooshter Beach Club, an ideal place to enjoy on the beach

As a part of the 5-star Hotel Le Meridien Lav, Gooshter Beach Club is an ideal place to enjoy on the beach, with music in the background and a very comfortable sitting in the shade. Here you can start a day with coffee and breakfast, spend the day with cocktails and at the end of the day with a glass of wine with a sunset view.

Gooshter Beach Club as an exotic place right on the beach

An additional advantage of this bar is that you have the option of ordering food and drinks directly from the beach while lying on a sun lounger and enjoying the sea view. This bar is also proud of a very attractive offer of food based on specialities from the Far East and South America. We suggest you try fried rice with fried vegetables in the wok.

Gooshter Beach Club except a casual atmosphere will win you with design. Surrounded by pine trees, the area is conceived as a perfect sunshine summer oasis. It helps most an interesting steel and cane canopy with hanging lamps. All the materials are only natural where wood dominates most. The conclusion is that they have worked hard to align the aesthetic part with the service and offer of the bar.

A nice beach with sun chairs and cabanas

Varied menu with many unusual dishes

However, the biggest problem with this bar is the price of food and drinks. Considering it is part of a 5-star hotel, the prices are tailored to that service. From the drink offer, I would point out a great selection of cocktails. But, for the cheapest, you will need to pay as much as 100 kunas (around 14€). Also, the price of beer of 8 euros seems a bit too much.

We really enjoyed our visits to Gooshter Beach Club!

This place has become popular because it is very photogenic for Instagram. Most of it contributes to the large long lounger with the wall inscription “There is no angry way to say bubbles”. In general, Gooshter Beach Club is designed to enjoy life. In conclusion, we are sure you will have the wish to stay here all day.

Radunica makes me feel like a true Dalmatian

While I was still a student of architecture, I got the task to explore one of the oldest neighborhoods in Split. My task to explore Radunica. It is a small neighborhood that won me with the charm of small and narrow streets. In this article, you will learn the history of this part of the city as well as the problems today. Simply, the most important information.

History of Radunica neighbourhood

When the Diocletian’s palace became small for its inhabitants, several neighbourhoods were founded around it. Some of them are Dobri, Manuš, Veli Varoš, and Lučac. For the first time, the neighbourhood Lučac is mentioned during the 13th century. Situated on the east side between Diocletian’s Palace and Gripe fortress. The main connection consists of two long streets, one of them is Radunica. Do you know that Radunica is not just a street name? That’s the name for the whole neighbourhood.

History of street names

The main street of Radunica is connected by numerous short and narrow streets. The names of these streets are also very interesting because they got the original families that lived there – Kuzmanić, Trumbić, Ružić, Duplančić, Petrić, Bubalo, Prvan, Dvornik, Čulić, etc. The neighborhood makes a very dense arrangement of stone houses, which are largely without any stylistic features. The history of this neighbourhood is also very interesting. Actually, during the Second World War, some parts of the city were destroyed during the Allied bombing from the air.

Radunica is becoming more and more a tourist resort

However, life in this neighbourhood due to increased tourism in the last couple of years is increasingly disappearing. Today Radunica is primarily an apartment street.  Many residents have left their homes and converted into apartments. Most of them don’t want to return because of the large profits.

Too many things have changed

You will very rarely hear children today on the street. It is particularly empty during the winter months. Look at this information! In 1994 Radunica had as many as 8 cafe bars and today it is only one. Moreover, the houses have received various upgrades and many strange architectural solutions.

Dani Radunice

However, this neighbourhood every year comes alive in the last week of June (for St. Peter). The reason is the return to the past during the festival called Dani Radunice. It is a traditional festival that lasts more than two decades. On that day the street becomes like in old times when it was a place of socializing with a raffle, sports matches, and music. Incidentally, this is also the biggest event during the year in this part of Split.

Riva Split, a place where you will feel the pulse of the city

Except for Diocletian’s Palace, Riva Split is certainly the most interesting place in the city of Split. Here is the morning coffee with a view on the harbour, boats, and people passing by. All important events are held here. Here are organized sports welcomes and protests. It is also a sacred place because there is the procession of St. Duje, patron of the city of Split and its citizens. In fact, this is where you will feel the pulse of the city.

The main information

Riva Split is 250 meters long and 55 meters wide and it is the largest public square. It’s located below Diocletian’s palace, more precisely below the former residence of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. From Riva, you can access the magnificent Diocletian’s basement. You can read more about them here. On its western end, there is a Franciscan monastery with the church of Saint Francis, while the eastern end defines the port authority building and newly-built tourist palace.

One of the most beautiful harbour promenades of the Mediterranean

Riva Split took up today’s look in 2006 by one of the most famous Croatian architectural office called 3LHD. A never-ending row of cafes and restaurants make this place special in every part of the day. Simply, you should visit Riva in the morning, at noon and in the evening. I have already written about places like Terminal F restaurant and ZOI Split.

A wealth of cafes, stalls, bars and restaurants

Lately, I often visit the cafe bar Olive Tree. Since it has opened it is my favourite place to relax. And it’s not without reason, because it is perhaps the only one on the entire Riva that you will notice in the sea of almost all the same cafe bars and restaurants. Olive trees with old lamps are definitely a trademark of outdoor decoration.

The Riva was lined with palm trees

In addition to all these things, the most beautiful part of the Riva is definitely part of the palm trees. They were to the Romans a sign of victory, upsurge, renewal, and they have also an important symbolism in Christianity as well. Simply, they make this space magical, and if you are here accidentally at sunset, you will surely want to sit and enjoy the hours in this ambience.

Sexy Cow Split, the best wrap I’ve ever had

Interesting and something different that Split offers. Amazing place, amazing food, amazing service! This is how I will start my new post about fast food Sexy Cow Split. Although the city is full of fast food, this one is remarkable. First of all, offering a wraps that you will rarely encounter.

Delicious wraps for lunch and breakfast!

The main offer consists of wraps that we have already mentioned and burgers. We ordered the wrap called Sexy Cow (rump steak, guacamole sauce, tomato salad, green salad and roast cap with sexy cow chef sauce) and a wrap called Do not tell your boyfriend (fresh beef meat, barbecue sauce, fried cheese, fried egg, green salad , tomato, pickled cucumbers and red caps) and we were enchanted. The taste was delighted as well as the fact that all the ingredients were extremely fresh. I believe that whatever you choose from this menu you will not go out without a smile on your face.

All the ingredients are fresh and prepared in front of you

The names themselves don’t say that it’s 100% domestic meat and vegetables grown by family agricultural trades from Croatia. There is also a cute version of the tortilla called Drive Me Nuts made of Nutella, banana, and hazelnut.

A street food style interior

Very kind staff will help you with advice about the order. Just because of very high-quality service, they get very high grades on TripAdvisor and other social networks. The biggest disadvantage of this fast food is because the space is really small and there is no terrace. However, the interior is modern with all the funny details. It follows the whole concept of fast food. Although the prices are slightly higher than from similar fast food nearby, because of service and quality they are fully justified.

Sexy Cow is a must stop in Split or you didn’t even come!!

We are sure that you will find the time to visit this place during your stay in Split. First of all because the local is just a 5-minute walk from Diocletian’s Palace and the Riva promenade.

Basement halls of Diocletian’s Palace as an inevitable tourist attraction

There are several places in the Split which you surely must visit. One of them is the Basement halls of Diocletian’s Palace. Honestly, when I started living inside the palace I realized how complex and how many interesting places it has. One of the most beautiful attractions of Split is definitely the basement halls of Diocletian’s Palace. Although today’s inevitable tourist attraction, their excavation began in the 19th century.  Actually, most parts were discovered during the middle of the last century.

A fantastic piece of history

This ancient complex was primarily used as the basis for the Emperor’s apartment above them. Because of that fact, the rooms of the basements coincided with the forms of Emperor’s buildings above. However, with the coming of the Middle Ages, the Emperor’s buildings are demolished and some parts of basement halls are used for housing. In one part, even oil and wine were produced.

The mixes of old and new are fascinating

Today, the basement halls of Diocletian’s Palace is full of life. Maybe more than ever before. Through the middle of it, there is a corridor connecting Peristyle and Riva. It is like the underground passage for souvenirs. There are so many vendors selling artworks to souvenirs. If you want to access the basements on both sides of this corridor, you will have to pay a ticket for about 6 euros. Very often these parts are a venue for fairs or exhibitions throughout the year.

Basement Halls of Diocletian’s Palace – problems today

The whole complex contains a large number of halls of different sizes.  I have to point out that the tourism boom in Split has also a lot of negative changes. Basement halls increasingly have problems with moisture and water that damage the stone. Also, the problem is more and more water leaks from the canalization pipes which are above the ceiling. Therefore, I hope that restoration will happen soon.

Great for Game of Thrones fans

A famous TV show called Game of Thrones used some areas here for filming. In general, movies and series are one of the main motives of travel, especially young people who increasingly choose Croatia as their destination for vacation and entertainment. I think there is a Game of Thrones walking tours you can get tickets to also.
